Happy 40th Anniversary, IDEA!

As Board President, it’s a joy for me to reflect on 40 years of God’s faithfulness through IDEA. What began with Dennis Drake and five young Deaf students has grown into a community that continues to change lives today.

Dennis once said, “My wish is for them to grow up healthy and hopeful, believing in themselves. I want to see them have families of their own, work they can be proud of, and a community of Deaf that will care for each other.”

That wish became a mission. Teachers went into jungles and rural villages to find children who didn’t have access to education. One small school grew into several campuses and eventually a thriving high school. As students advanced, new businesses like Garden Café were started to provide jobs. Twenty-five years ago, TipTip Deaf Church was also founded.

Dennis lived to see much of his vision fulfilled. Today, his legacy continues through his wife Marilou, through dedicated teachers and staff in the Philippines, and through faithful partners like you. Your prayers, sponsorships, fundraising, and mission trips have carried this vision forward.

Before he passed, Dennis reflected: “The world has changed here in Bohol. People used to have misconceptions about their abilities. Now they see them with good jobs and say, ‘There’s a person going someplace.’ Some of these kids will be tomorrow’s leaders. The most unique thing is they’re like a family who care for, love, and help each other. That is the heart of IDEA and the Deaf community.”

That heart is still alive and strong. On behalf of the board, I thank you for being part of this story. As we celebrate 40 years, we look ahead with hope, knowing that the best chapters are still being written by Deaf leaders — and by the Great Author.

With gratitude,
James Movius
